FLETA Board Grants Initial Accreditation and Reaccreditation to U.S. Coast Guard Programs

The Federal Law Enforcement Training Accreditation (FLETA) Board ispleased to announce it granted initial accreditation status to the U.S.Coast Guard Boarding Team Member Course and reaccreditation to the U.S.Coast Guard Basic Boarding Officer Course at the July 12, 2012 meetingin Glynco, Georgia. Commander Paul Baker accepted both programcertificates on behalf of Rear Admiral Mehling, thanking the Board andthe staff at the Maritime Law Enforcement Academy for their hardwork.

 

The Boarding Team Member Course is designed to prepare Coast Guardpersonnel to fill the role as a member of a law enforcement boardingteam. The target audience is enlisted personnel of grades E-2 to E-5,and junior officers, with little or no law enforcement experience whoare assigned to units having a law enforcement mission. The courseprovides a foundation in authority and jurisdiction, defensive tactics,searches of persons, use of force, tactical procedures, and boardingprocedures.

 

The Basic Boarding Officer Course is offered to U.S. Coast Guardpersonnel and foreign naval officers to prepare Boarding Officers forthe duties associated with enforcing laws and treaties at sea.Graduates of the BBOC possess the skills and knowledge necessary tolead a Coast Guard boarding team in the enforcement of U.S. laws andregulations. During the five-week course, students receive training in a variety of courses including criminal law, defensive tactics, andboating safety.

 

To achieve accreditation, agencies submit to an independent reviewof their academy and/or program to ensure compliance with the FLETAStandards and Procedures in the areas of: Program Administration,Training Staff, Training Development, and Training Delivery, with anadditional 20 standards for Academies. Accreditation is a cyclicalprocess occurring every three years. Each year, agencies must submitannual reports in preparation for reaccreditation, which is a new andindependent review of the academy/program.
