FLETA Accredits DEA Academy and Two Programs

For Immediate Release
DEA staff accepts the certificate for Academy accreditation.

The Federal Law Enforcement Training Accreditation (FLETA) Board is pleased to announce it granted initial accreditation status to the Drug Enforcement Administration’s (DEA) Basic Agent Training Program and Instructor Development Course, and reaccreditation status to the DEA Academy at the November 18-21, 2014 meeting in Glynco, GA.

The DEA Basic Agent Training Program is an 18-week entry-level training program designed to prepare DEA Special Agents for field assignments nationwide. Core instructional areas include confidential source management, undercover operations, surveillance, operational planning, search warrant management, prisoner processing, report writing, evidence handling, interview and interrogation techniques, standards of conduct, DEA mission and history, drug recognition, computer information systems, and legal training.  Students receive over 127 hours of firearms training.  The physical fitness and defensive tactics regimen is designed to help students prevail in compliant and non-compliant arrest situations.

The Instructor Development Course (IDC) is a six-day course that is designed to develop basic instructor skills critical to delivering professional instruction, briefings, and presentations, and prepare new instructors for teaching assignments.  All assigned personnel tasked with development, management, or delivery of instruction are required to attend and successfully complete the requirements of the IDC at the next available course.  Courses include: Instructional Systems Design; Platform Skills; Lesson Plan Development; Copyright Law; Power Point Development; Speech Anxiety; Characteristics of Effective Instructors; and Adult Learning.

The mission of the Drug Enforcement Administration's (DEA) Office of Training is to develop, deliver and advocate preeminent law enforcement and non-law enforcement training to DEA personnel and appropriate federal, state, local, and foreign law enforcement counterparts. The DEA Academy population consists of Basic Agent Trainees, Basic Diversion Investigator Trainees, Basic Intelligence Research Specialist Trainees, and Basic Forensic Chemist Trainees. Professional and executive development, certification programs, core in-service, and specialized training programs are also conducted at the Office of Training. The DEA Training Academy is an 185,000 square foot, state-of-the-art training facility located in Quantico Virginia.

The FLETA Board is the accrediting body for all federal law enforcement training and support programs. To achieve accreditation, agencies submit to an independent review of their academy and/or program to ensure compliance with the FLETA Standards and Procedures in the areas of: Program Administration, Training Staff, Training Development, and Training Delivery, with an additional 20 standards for Academies. Accreditation is a cyclical process occurring every five years. Each year, agencies must submit annual reports in preparation for reaccreditation, which is a new and independent review of the academy/program.
