
Matt Hershey is the Assistant Director (AD) for Training of the United States Marshals Service (USMS). In this capacity, AD Hershey oversees the USMS Training Division (TD) and is responsible for all aspects of training the nation’s oldest law enforcement agency. AD Hershey oversees all USMS training programs under the National Training Academy, Center of Excellence for Officer Safety and Wellness, and the Leadership Development Branch. Additionally, AD Hershey is responsible for curriculum development and review, instructor development, training management, and officer-safety related equipment.
In 2003, AD Hershey began his USMS career in the District of Arizona-Tucson Division. In January 2006, AD Hershey transferred to the District of Arizona-Phoenix Division and was soon assigned to the District of Arizona High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area (HIDTA) Task Force. As a Team Leader and Supervisory Deputy U.S. Marshal, AD Hershey played a key role in the transformation of enforcement operations when he helped create the Arizona WANTED Violent Offender Task Force, which significantly expanded the agency’s capabilities to support our state and local partners and communities by reducing crime through targeting fugitives wanted for violent crimes.
After spending almost a decade conducting enforcement operations, AD Hershey was promoted to Assistant Chief Deputy U.S. Marshal in the District of Arizona. In this capacity, AD Hershey oversaw the daily operations of the Phoenix and Yuma Divisions and created and led the District Training Unit, the first dedicated district training unit in the agency.
In 2016, AD Hershey followed his passion for training and was selected to lead the National Training Academy at the USMS TD. In this capacity, AD Hershey oversaw all basic training programs for the agency. AD Hershey was later assigned to lead the Law Enforcement Safety Training Program, which encompassed all officer-safety training and equipment programs for the agency.
In 2020, AD Hershey was promoted to Chief Deputy U.S. Marshal (CDUSM) in the Southern District of Georgia. In this capacity, AD Hershey was responsible for the daily activities of USMS personnel across the six divisions which encompassed 43 counties across the state of Georgia.
AD Hershey is the recipient of numerous Director’s Honorary Group Awards and the Medal of Honor from the Mesa, Arizona Police Department.
