FLETA Board Grants Reaccreditation to two CBP programs

For Immediate Release
Customs and Border Protection staff present their reaccreditation certificate for Officer Basic Training and Air and Marine Basic

The Federal Law Enforcement Training Accreditation (FLETA) Board is pleased to announce it granted reaccreditation status to the U.S. Customs and Border Protection’s (CBP) Officer Basic Training (OBT) and Air and Marine Basic Training Program (AMBTP) at the April 14-16, 2015 meeting in Quantico, VA.

The CBP OBT program previously known as both the Field Operations Officer Basic Training (FOOBT) and Customs and Border Protection Integrated (CBPI) was first created by the blending of the Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) Immigration Officer Academy (IOA) with the U.S. Customs Service (USCS) Academy and the U.S. Department of Agriculture. This comprehensive training program is conducted at the CBP Field Operations Academy, Glynco, Georgia training site. A variety of instructional methods including lecture, labs and practical exercises prepare the entry level officer candidates to detect terrorists and instruments of terror, to determine admissibility of applicants seeking entry to the United States, to facilitate the flow of lawful goods and items in and out of the country and to protect the U.S. from harmful products and pests.

The CBP AMBTP provides Air Interdiction Agents (AIAs), Marine Interdiction Agents (MIAs) and Aviation Enforcement Agents (AEAs) with the law enforcement skills needed to support CBP’s anti-terrorism mission at U.S. borders including air-to-ground and maritime interception of people and contraband crossing the border while providing support for CBP’s traditional work such as border interceptions unrelated to terrorism. The AMBTP provides strong fundamental law enforcement training utilizing Air and Marine applications in scenario based training as well as law enforcement water training and survival techniques. This robust 73 day program provides the new agent with a broad academic and practical knowledge base. Measurement of student mastery of objectives is accomplished through written exams and practical exercises.

The FLETA Board is the accrediting body for all federal law enforcement training and support programs. To achieve accreditation, agencies submit to an independent review of their academy and/or program to ensure compliance with the FLETA Standards and Procedures in the areas of: Program Administration, Training Staff, Training Development, and Training Delivery, with an additional 20 standards for Academies. Accreditation is a cyclical process occurring every five years. Each year, agencies must submit annual reports in preparation for reaccreditation, which is a new and independent review of the academy/program.
